[edit] Press Release - "EveryonesHome"
There's something a bit different happening in Londons homelessness sector. EveryonesHome.Org.Uk bills itself as the antidote to existing insufficient frameworks to combat homelessness. Focusing foremostly on East London: EveryonesHome.org.uk puts its faith in bricks, mortar and homeless people themselves to make the difference, using new methods of communication and reaching out to campaign for a concept Shelter that can truly bring the finishing line of ending homelessness into sight for all "profiles" of homeless persons.
Ironically than, EveryonesHome.org.uk also puts faith in the internet and web2.0 open participation, the website which bills itself as an "open source solution to homelessness" claims it can help over 10,240 people a year get one night off the streets, and 10 of that number a six month tenancy, for little more than £200,000 a year. If it had the money of course.
This marks a stark contrast to other organisations approach working in the sector, because EveryonesHome.org.uk sees homelessness in a simple light against the backdrop of the UK's housing crisis - people need shelter, not just advice about it, and with the completely open source website to provide the best housing advice, from the street to the street EveryonesHome hopes to do more than make a Shelter in London more openly accessible than any other. It aims to revolutionise the flow of information about homelessness services so that the whole sector can reassess and redirect their efforts towards ending homelessness through housing and community integration. The founder of the website and initial general idea, John Monday, explains:
"The private sector has failed, the government has thrown a little extra money at a problem that needs some Northern Rock style funding. Then they shrugged, and the charitable sector has become the third sector and been sorely affected by governments continuing irresponsibility to decide whether homelessness is their responsibility or not. But the main issue is not one of money, so much as the regulation and expansion of the strictures of a land law suited more to feudal times then a modern world economy.
"Politics aside we're talking mass acceptance of the fact that whilst animals can build all the shelter they desire, homeless people are tolerated on the streets as being a normal fact of life when it is a patent affront to any moral code of any religious, or ethical system of any worth in a person. EveryonesHome.org.uk is honestly against that kind of resignation and apathy.
"A solution for anyone on the street doesn't have to be a palace, in fact the EveryonesHome.org.uk format ensures people who are homeless get exactly what they need, when needed: A Japanese style sleeping capsule for ten hours and some food. If job training or support services are needed, EveryonesHome.org.uk will try and link them up with a solution. The concept is simple, approachable and likable, wasting not money, and encouraging no discrimination or over compartmentalizing of approach to helping the situation in London.
"The solution is up to us: EveryonesHome.org.uk is a rapidly expanding resource of organisational, academic and practical information to end homelessness in the UK, and by keeping the agenda focused to the provision of relevant useful information and creation of openly accessible, analysed and evolving Shelters Together we can make sure Everyones Home and homelessness is a thing of the past, but we need you, because London needs you, united in free systems of participation and creativity we can make a vision shared by many committed and caring people of our City, come true.
